Personal breathalyzers

Professional breathalyzers from Medica+

Professional breathalyzers used by law enforcement agencies, whose measurement results can be used as evidence during investigations, must comply with state standards. These are exactly the types of devices offered by Medica+, whose main field of activity is a wide range of medical equipment.

How a breathalyzer works

A breathalyzer measures the amount of alcohol in a person’s blood by analyzing exhaled air. This is possible because after entering the stomach, alcohol molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream and distributed to all organs, particularly the lungs. Measurements are based on known data about the ratio between blood alcohol concentration and its content in the respiratory system, which is 1:2100. This means that the volume of air in the lungs, represented by the second number, contains the same amount of alcohol as 1 ml of blood.

Professional breathalyzers can operate based on the following principles:

  • electrochemical;
  • semiconductor;
  • infrared.

The last option is quite bulky and is therefore used in specialized laboratories, while the first two are widely used “in the field.”

An electrochemical breathalyzer, the price of which depends on the configuration, provides more accurate measurement results. It works thanks to electrodes where alcohol molecules oxidize, generating an electric current. The strength of this current indicates the concentration of alcohol in the blood. The only drawback of the device is that it does not distinguish whether the air comes directly from the lungs or from the upper respiratory tract. If alcohol was consumed recently, the results may be significantly overestimated.

A semiconductor breathalyzer can be purchased in Poland at a выгодная price in our online store, as we offer high-quality health products and consumables for them. The operating principle of such an analyzer is based on alcohol molecules changing the resistance of materials when they settle on them. These changes are converted into numerical values and indicate the concentration of alcohol in the blood. A semiconductor breathalyzer is less accurate and may react to other substances (tobacco smoke, perfumes), but it is much cheaper, more compact, and more convenient to use than its electrochemical counterpart, making it suitable for home use.

Where are professional breathalyzers used?

Breathalyzers are used not only by law enforcement agencies but also in hazardous industries where maximum concentration is required. These devices are widely used to monitor the condition of drivers in public and specialized transport enterprises.
