The oral irrigator is an extremely useful device that can significantly improve the health of your teeth and gums. It produces a thin, pulsating stream of water or a special solution that effectively rinses away food debris, bacterial plaque, and soft deposits from hard-to-reach areas.

History of the Invention

Few people know this, but the first oral irrigator was invented in 1962 by Americans Gerald Moen and John Matusich. The inventors realized that not everyone wants to use dental floss, and that this new device would make oral care simpler and more pleasant. In the 1970s, oral irrigators began to be actively used in U.S. hospitals for patients with braces, crowns, implants, and sensitive gums.

Effectiveness confirmed by research

Today, the effectiveness of oral irrigators has been confirmed by numerous studies worldwide. The therapy shows particularly good results in cases of gingivitis and bleeding gums. At the University of Southern California, it was discovered that cleaning the gingival sulcus with a pulsating water jet at 1,200 pulses per minute and an average pressure of 490 kPa removes 99.9% of plaque. Achieving such results with dental floss is impossible. Furthermore, it is important to remember that in addition to thorough cleaning, the device also massages the gums—an important part of daily oral hygiene.

When to use an oral irrigator

An oral irrigator does not replace a toothbrush, but complements it, providing comprehensive and professional care for teeth and gums at home. The decision to purchase an oral irrigator should be made in consultation with your dentist. Your dentist will assess the condition of your mouth and explain how to use the device.

An oral irrigator is recommended:

  • for orthodontic appliances, implants, crowns, bridges, and veneers;
  • for gum disease;
  • for people with sensitive gums;
  • for large interdental spaces (diastema, gaps) or receding gums;
  • for pregnant women.

Generally speaking, the irrigator is suitable for everyone who strives for optimal oral hygiene, even in the absence of problems.

Contraindications/h2

There are certain situations and conditions in which the use of an irrigator may be undesirable or require special caution.

Absolute contraindications include:

  • acute stages of periodontitis with abscesses or severe exacerbation;
  • after recent oral surgery;
  • severe cardiovascular diseases (in the decompensated phase) or a history of endocarditis.

Relative contraindications, i.e., those that do not prohibit the use of irrigators but only require caution, include:

  • tooth sensitivity;
  • the first few days of adjustment to orthodontic appliances or dentures;
  • the presence of oral cancers.

MEDICA+ emphasizes: using an oral irrigator should be comfortable, and if you experience any discomfort, you should stop the procedure and see your dentist.

How to use an oral irrigator correctly

  1. Attach the selected tip.
  2. Fill the reservoir with clean water or add a special solution to the water.
  3. Select a mode.
  4. Place the irrigator tip in your mouth at the level of your molars and hold it at a distance from your teeth and gums at a 90° angle. Lean over the sink to avoid splashing water.
  5. Turn on the irrigator at the lowest pressure setting and gradually increase it. The water can flow into the sink, or you can close your mouth and spit it out later.
  6. Move the irrigator from one tooth to the next, following the gum line, along the interdental spaces, and around the tips of the teeth. Allow about 2 seconds per tooth. Move along the inner and outer surfaces of your teeth, gradually working your way around. On average, this process takes 2 minutes.
  7. After finishing the procedure, turn off the device, pour out any remaining water, and leave the reservoir open. If you use special solutions, the irrigator should be rinsed additionally.
