Oral hygiene is essential for maintaining healthy teeth, gums, and a healthy mouth.

Brushing teeth is a daily ritual for everyone, but not everyone follows all the steps of proper oral hygiene. In this article, we will discuss how to properly care for your teeth, brushing techniques and guidelines for adults and children, as well as habits to avoid in order to maintain a healthy smile.

Toothbrushing Technique

The correct toothbrushing procedure consists of the following steps:

  1. Brushing your teeth (Medica+ has developed the best ultrasonic toothbrushes on the Ukrainian market) to remove plaque. You should brush your teeth twice a day.
  2. Cleaning between teeth with dental floss to remove debris from hard-to-reach areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. Floss can be used after every meal.
  3. Mouthwash. It can be used both after brushing your teeth and throughout the day.

In addition to basic care, dentists recommend using oral irrigators. They should be used after brushing your teeth twice a day. Stationary water flossers are convenient to use at home, especially if you have a large family, and portable irrigators are convenient and easy to transport.

Basic rules for brushing your teeth

  1. Apply a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to your toothbrush and spread it evenly over the surface of your teeth.
  2. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and use circular motions from the gums toward the teeth, with half of the brush head touching the gums.
  3. Use 3–4 strokes on each tooth.
  4. Start brushing with the back teeth.
  5. Brush the chewing surfaces of the back teeth using horizontal strokes.
  6. Finally, brush your tongue (from the base to the tip).
  7. After brushing your teeth, clean the spaces between your teeth with dental floss.
  8.  Finally, rinse your mouth with mouthwash for 30 seconds.

If you notice blood while brushing your teeth, it may mean that the bristles of your toothbrush are too hard for you or that your brushing technique is too aggressive.

The rules for brushing children’s teeth are slightly different: the upper teeth are brushed from top to bottom, from the gums to the edges, and the lower teeth in the opposite direction—from bottom to top. Use sweeping motions to effectively remove plaque from the surface of the teeth. Proper toothbrushing technique will protect the enamel from damage and wedge-shaped cavities.
